SportsPulse: Week 1 is in the books and we break down the risers and fallers in our first regular season power rankings of the year.
The San Francisco 49ers will be without one of their marquee defenders for the early part of the season as they try to get their campaign back on track.
Cornerback Richard Sherman is being placed on injured reserve with a leg ailment, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Wednesday, ruling him out for at least the next three weeks.
Sherman, 32, played 78 snaps (95% of the defensive total) in the 49ers’ 24-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The five-time Pro Bowl selection had three interceptions last season and helped lead his team to Super Bowl LIV.
San Francisco’s next three games are all against 0-1 teams: the New York Jets, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.
Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who is expected to replace Sherman in the starting lineup, is in the league’s concussion protocol, according to The Athletic.
All-Pro tight end George Kittle is also dealing with a left knee sprain sustained in the loss to the Cardinals.
