Cori “Coco” Gauff will crack the top-100 for the first time when the WTA rankings are next released after a run to the quarter-finals in Linz.

Gauff, 15, captured the hearts of the British public this summer as she became the youngest qualifier at Wimbledon in the Open Era before storming into the fourth round, losing to eventual champion Simona Halep, and she enjoyed a run to the third round at the US Open.

“Coco Mania” may have died down somewhat given she is limited in the number of events she can play until she turns 16 due to WTA rules, and she was beaten in qualifying by Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch in her first tour event since losing to Naomi Osaka at her home Grand Slam.

But the American was given a reprieve by entering the main draw as a lucky loser following Maria Sakkari’s withdrawal and has taken full advantage, winning back-to-back matches against Stefanie Voegele and Kateryna Kozlova.

Her victory against Ukraine’s Kozlova – courtesy of retirement in the third set due to a left leg injury – on Wednesday will see her rise inside the top-100, provisionally to world No. 94.

It’s the first time she will compete in a quarter-final at tour level. Top seed Kiki Bertens, who faces Misaka Doi in round one, could be her next opponent, with Alison van Uytvanck awaiting the Dutch star in round two.

In Shanghai, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic was at his imperious best as he eased past Denis Shapovalov 6-3 6-3.

The defending champion – who has won 12 sets on the spin – will take on big-serving John Isner in round three.

Medvedev vs Pospisil
Fognini vs Khachanov

David Goffin advanced to round three after Mikhail Kukushkin was forced to retire. The Belgian will face Roger Federer next.

Stefanos Tsitsipas finally recorded a win over Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, having lost to him in five previous meetings including three at junior level, with Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev among those still left in the draw.
